Constitutional Development of India can be traced back to the Regulating act of 1773 and have taken cues from various other laws passed during the British rule and culminated with the Constituent Assembly. With the provisions for amendment, the constitutional development of India is an ongoing process. Constituent assembly held its first meeting on December 9,1946. The drafting committee headed by Dr B.R.Ambedkar prepared the draft of the constitution. On 26 November 1949,constitution of India was adopted making India a sovereign,Socialist and Democratic Republic.This article provides a brief overview of the development of the Indian Constitution, beginning with the Regulating Act of 1773 till the Constitution of India's implementation in 1950 which is an important topic for both Prelims and Mains of the IAS Exam.

The Constituent Assembly was vested with the duty of the preparation of the Constitution of India. The Constituent Assembly completed the historic task of drafting the Indian Constitution in exactly two years, eleven months, and seventeen days. During this time, the Assembly met eleven times for a total of 165 days, including 114 days dedicated completely to debating the Draft Constitution.

The Indian Constitution is the country's supreme law. It establishes the government's core political principles, methods, practices rights, authorities, and responsibilities.
