Sugar Production - Significance

  • By reducing oil imports and blending ethanol with gasoline as part of the Ethanol Blended with Petrol initiative, the government hopes to lower its import bill for crude oil.

  • Additionally, the government is encouraging sugar mills to divert excess sugarcane to ethanol that is blended with gasoline in order to reduce pollution and make India Atma Nirbhar in the petroleum sector.
