Answer the questions that follow based on either English passage or Marathi passage.

Biology is the study of living things and their vital processes. The field deals with all the physicochemical aspects of life. The modern tendency toward cross-disciplinary research and the unification of scientific knowledge and investigation from different fields has resulted in significant overlap of field of biology with other scientific disciplines. Modern principles of other fields-chemistry, physics, and medicine, for example-are integrated with those of biology in areas such as biochemistry, biomedicine, and biophysics.

Biology is subdivided into separate branches for convenience of study, though all the subdivisions are interrelated by basic principles. Thus, while it is custom to separate the study of plants (botany) from that of animals (zoology), and the study of the structure of organisms (morphology) from that of function (physiology), all living things share in common certain biological phenomena-for example, various means of reproduction, cell division, and the transmission of genetic material.

Biology is often approached on the basis of levels that deal with fundamental units of life. At the level of molecular biology, life is regarded as a manifestation of chemical and energy transformations that occur among the many chemical constituents that compose an organism. As a result of the development of increasingly powerful and precise laboratory instruments and techniques, it is possible to understand and define with high precision and accuracy not only the ultimate physiochemical organization (ultrastructure) of the molecules in living matter but also the way living matter reproduces at the molecular level. Especially crucial to those advances was the rise of genomics in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.

21. Identify the correct statement from the following that best captures the passage’s explanation of why biology increasingly overlaps with disciplines such as chemistry, physics, and medicine.

(A) The traditional branches of biology have become obsolete because other sciences now explain biological phenomena more effectively.

(B) Chemistry, physics, and medicine have become specialized branches within the discipline of biology.

(C) The study of life increasingly requires the integration of physicochemical principles and knowledge from multiple scientific fields.

(D) Biology has abandoned its independent principles in favour of methods developed in other sciences.

Correct Answer:(C)

22. Which development is identified by the passage as especially crucial to the increasing precision with which molecular-level biological phenomena can be understood ?

(A) The rise of genomics during the late 20th and early 21st centuries

(B) The separation of botany from zoology

(C) The establishment of morphology and physiology as separate branches

(D) The integration of medicine with biology

Correct Answer:(A)

23. Which inference about the passage’s treatment of molecular biology is most logically justified ?

(A) Molecular biology has rendered the study of physiology and morphology unnecessary.

(B) Molecular biology represents a level of biological inquiry at which chemical transformations and energy processes are used to understand living systems.

(C) Molecular biology interprets life primarily through the classification of organisms according to their external structures.

(D) Molecular biology is concerned exclusively with the genetic transmission of material between organisms.

Correct Answer:(B)

24. The distinction between botany and zoology, and between morphology and physiology, is presented in the passage primarily as a means of

(A) Demonstrating that plants and animals possess fundamentally different biological processes.

(B) Replacing the unified study of living organisms with increasingly specialized disciplines.

(C) Establishing fundamentally different principles for different categories of organisms.

(D) Facilitating the study of particular aspects of life despite the underlying interconnectedness of biological phenomena.

Correct Answer:(D)

25. Which of the following most accurately expresses the central conceptual progression of the passage ?

(A) From biology as a unified study of life → to specialized but interconnected branches → to increasingly precise molecular-level investigation enabled by technological and genomic advances.

(B) From molecular biology → to morphology and physiology → to the eventual integration of botany and zoology.

(C) From traditional biological divisions → to the replacement of biology by chemistry and physics → to the emergence of biomedicine.

(D) From the classification of organisms → to the rejection of specialized branches → to the dominance of genomics.

Correct Answer:(A)
