Which of the following bodies issue ‘Aadhaar’ number to residents of India ?
UIDAI
Aadhaar is a 12 digit unique identity number issued to residents of India on the basis of their biometric data (fingerprints and iris scans) and demographic data. The body that issues it is the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). It was set up in 2009 and became a statutory authority under the Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Act, 2016, under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
UIDAI enrols residents, generates and issues the Aadhaar number, maintains the Central Identities Data Repository and provides online authentication services. Aadhaar is now a base for e-governance services such as direct benefit transfer, e-KYC for bank accounts and mobile connections, and linking with PAN, which makes the issuing authority central to digital governance in the country.
EPIC stands for Electors Photo Identity Card, which is the voter identity card issued by the Election Commission of India; it is a document, not the body that issues Aadhaar. UDAI is an incomplete and wrong form of the name of the authority. NPCI is the National Payments Corporation of India, which runs payment systems such as UPI and RuPay and does not issue identity numbers.
Hence, UIDAI.
