Write the full form of ‘NWICO’.
New World Information and Communication Order
NWICO is a concept from the international debate on media and communication. During the 1970s and 1980s, developing and non-aligned countries argued that the flow of news and information in the world was one-way and unequal, dominated by a few Western news agencies, and that this created cultural and media imperialism.
To correct this imbalance they demanded a New World Information and Communication Order. The idea was taken up by UNESCO, and the MacBride Commission report ‘Many Voices, One World’ in 1980 discussed it in detail. Its aims were a free and balanced flow of information, stronger national news agencies in the developing world and fair access to communication technology.
The expansions that use Industrial, Commercial or Commerce change the meaning of the term, because NWICO was concerned with news, information and media, not with trade or industry. That economic debate was a separate demand known as the New International Economic Order. Only the expansion that combines information with communication is the accepted full form.
Hence, New World Information and Communication Order.
