Gautam Buddha’s teaching ‘Atta Deepo Bhava!’ falls under which type of communication ?
Intra-personal communication
Communication is classified by the number of people taking part. Intra-personal communication takes place within a single individual, as in thinking, self-talk, reflection and self-examination. Inter-personal communication involves two or a few people, group communication involves a small gathering, and mass communication reaches a large scattered audience through media.
The Pali saying ‘Atta Deepo Bhava!’ means ‘Be a lamp unto yourself’. Gautam Buddha asked his disciples to depend on their own inner light, to examine their own thoughts and to find the truth through self-reflection rather than through any outside authority. Such a dialogue with one’s own self, where the same person is both the sender and the receiver of the message, is the defining feature of intra-personal communication.
Mass communication needs a medium and a large audience, which is not the point of this teaching. Group communication and inter-personal communication both require at least one other person who receives the message. The teaching, however, directs the individual inward towards self-guidance, so none of these outward forms fits it.
Hence, Intra-personal communication.
