  • Currently, more than 92% of Fair Price Shops (FPSs) in the country have ePoS devices and biometric identification of beneficiaries.
  • The CCEA approved the Scheme in October 2012. The Government has designated the Scheme as a Mission Mode Project (MMP).
  • To combat leakages and diversions of foodgrains, the Department has begun DBT (Cash Transfers) for foodgrains and is pursuing DBT with states/UTs (Cash Transfers).
  • The subsidy component is credited directly into the bank accounts of eligible beneficiaries, who are free to purchase foodgrains from anywhere in the market to ensure their entitlement to foodgrains.

  • The digitised list of beneficiaries will be made public on the TPDS portals of state governments. This will increase transparency in beneficiary identification, allow beneficiaries to check their status, encourage social auditing, and so on.
  • Beneficiaries can also check the status of foodgrains allocated for their respective Fair Price Shop (FPS) each month via the State TPDS portal, including the quantity delivered at the FPS, the date delivered, and so on.
  • Beneficiaries can also sign up for SMS alerts, which notify them via SMS when a vehicle carrying foodgrains is dispatched, a receipt is made at the FPS, and so on.
  • Beneficiaries will be denied entitlement if they do not have timely access to information about the availability of foodgrains, and their trips to FPSs will be reduced.
  • Grievances can also be registered and tracked through the State TPDS portal, toll-free helpline numbers, and other channels. If the complaints are not resolved in a timely manner, they will be escalated to senior officers.
  • If beneficiaries provide their mobile numbers when filing their grievances, they can receive an acknowledgement via SMS, and once the grievance is resolved, they can be contacted again.
  • Computerization of last mile activities, such as foodgrain distribution at the FPS level, is also being pursued.
  • Once FPS automation is implemented, genuine beneficiaries can be authenticated using a point of sale device at the FPS, the sale transaction captured online, and so on to ensure that the required quantities of foodgrains reach the intended recipients.
