Rainfed agriculture includes both plantation crops (such as rubber, tea, and coffee) and annual crops (such as wheat, maize, and rice). Tubers, a staple crop in Sub-Saharan Africa, for example, have been largely unaffected by the green revolution's technological advances. Rainfed farming accounts for 80% of cropland on the planet and produces more than 60% of cereal grains, providing jobs in rural areas while also feeding cities. Rainfed agriculture produces high yields in temperate regions with relatively reliable rainfall and good soils. Supplemental irrigation practices increase yields even further.
