Deposition, compaction, and cementation primarily play a major role in the formation of sedimentary rocks. Sedimentary rocks are known as stratified rocks because of their distinctive stratification, unlike other types of rocks. Sedimentary rocks can be distinguished by color, particle size, cement type, or internal placement. Sedimentary rocks are categorized by age, and various types of rocks formed during the same period are grouped. Most of the solid surface of our planet (about 70%) is composed of sedimentary rocks. In this article, we will learn about Sedimentary Rocks which is part of Geomorphology, an integral part of the Geography Syllabus.

What are Sedimentary Rocks?

  • Sedimentary rocks are those that are created at the Earth's surface by the deposition and lithification (compaction and cementation) of sediment particles with the help of moving water, wind, ice, or living creatures.
  • Sediments transported by various denudational agencies such as running water, wind, and sea waves are eventually deposited in depressions varying in size from small ponds to huge basins.
  • The compaction and consolidation of these layers into a stiff mass of rock known as sedimentary rock occurs as sediments are deposited layer by layer over thousands or millions of years.
  • The most important geological processes that lead to the creation of sedimentary rocks are erosion, weathering, dissolution, precipitation, and lithification.
  • The actions of wind and rain, which gradually break down huge boulders into smaller ones, are included in erosion and weathering.
  • Boulders and even mountains are eroded and weathered into sediments like sand and mud.
  • Chemical weathering, or dissolution, is a type of weathering where slightly acidic water progressively wears away stone in this method.
  • The hardening of layers of loose sediment into rock is known as lithification. Cementation and compaction are the two processes that makeup lithification.These three processes provide the foundation for the formation of new sedimentary rocks.
  • Sediments might be coarse, fine, soft, or firm in texture.
  • Sediments are particles that form naturally as a result of weathering and erosion of pre-existing rocks.

Mechanically Formed / Clastic Sedimentary Rocks

  • Mechanical agents such as moving water, wind, ocean currents, ice, and so on shape them.
  • Arenaceous sedimentary rocks are hard and permeable, with more sand and larger particles. For liquids such as groundwater and petroleum, they are the finest reservoirs. For example, sandstone.
  • More clay is found in argillaceous rocks, which are fine-grained, softer, and mainly impermeable (mostly non-porous or have very tiny pores).
  • Claystone and shales, for example, are mostly argillaceous.
  • They are also called clastic sedimentary rocks because they're made up of clasts, which are small shards of fractured rock that have been heaped up and "lithified" by compaction and cementation.
  • Lithification is the process of converting sediments into solid rock.
  • The first step is compaction where sediments that have been deposited are buried and more and more sediments accumulate above them.
  • The clasts are pushed together by the weight of the overlying sediments, which closes the pore spaces (gaps between grains) and forces them together.
  • The next phase is cementation where ions that are present in groundwater flow through the remaining pore spaces, and these ions may precipitate, leaving minerals in the pore spaces.
  • These minerals bind the grains together and are referred to collectively as cement.
  • Mechanically created sedimentary rocks include conglomerate, sandstone, shale, limestone, loess, and others.

Organically Formed

  • The formation of these rocks is due to the buildup of living creatures such as corals, shellfish, grass, and plankton.
  • Organic sedimentary rocks are created over long periods under different pressures and temperatures.
  • Different forms of organic sedimentary rocks will form as pressure and temperature rise.
  • Example- Different forms of coal i.e. peat, lignite, bituminous, and anthracite.
  • The most well-known calcareous rocks, such as Chalk, are created in this manner.
  • Carbonaceous rocks, on the other hand, are created organically, but from vegetative matter.

Chemically Formed

  • When standing water evaporates, leaving dissolved minerals behind, many of these forms.
  • Chemical sedimentary rocks are dominated by components that have been transported as ions in solution (Na+, Ca2+, HCO3–, etc.)
  • Mineral components in solution become supersaturated and inorganically precipitate, forming sedimentary rocks.
  • Chemically produced sedimentary rocks include chert, limestone, halite, potash, and others.

Significance of Sedimentary Rocks

  • Sedimentary rocks have characteristics that help us understand old depositional habitats, such as the evolution of animals and the environments they lived in, how climate has changed through time, where and when faults were active, and so on.
  • Sandstone is widely used in building construction, especially in areas with large amounts of sandstone.
  • Most oil and gas migrate via sedimentary rocks, and most reservoirs are housed in sedimentary rocks. Petroleum reservoirs have organic-rich, sedimentary source rocks that create petroleum when heated.
  • Sedimentary rocks are the most common source of water aquifers (although some are in fractured metamorphic and igneous rocks). Due to water-rock interactions, the composition of the rocks has a significant impact on water quality.
  • Sedimentary rocks also host economic minerals such as gold and diamonds, which are eroded from other rocks and concentrated in specific areas during sediment transport.
  • Limestone is the main raw material for Portland cement. Slate is used as an ingredient in cement manufacturing
  • Sandstone and limestone are used for the development of pavement stone and avenue stone.
  • Shale is used as a filler in many paints.
