Globally, behind China and the United States, India is the third greatest emitter of greenhouse gases, emitting around 2.6 billion tonnes CO2 equivalent each year. However, India's per capita emissions are just 1.8 tonnes, well below the global average of 4.4 tonnes. India has promised in its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to "reduce the emission intensity of its GDP by 33 to 35% by 2030 from 2005 levels." Greenhouse Gas Emissions
