Athirajendra (1067 - 1070 CE) - Important Ruler of Chola Dynasty - Medieval India History Notes

Athirajendra Chola (1067-1070 CE) reigned for a very short period after his father, Virarajendra Chola. Civil unrest, possibly of a religious nature, characterised his reign. The Tamil Chola Dynasty's final clan was Athirajendra Chola. In this article, we will discuss the Ruler of Chola Dynasty Athirajendra (1067-1070) which will be helpful for UPSC exam preparation.

Background

Athirajendra - Background

  • Athirajendra Chola reigned as Chola king for only a few months after his father, Virarajendra Chola.
  • Athirajendra Chola was the last clan of the Chola Dynasty.
  • He was assassinated in the midst of religious upheaval.
  • After the death in 1061 CE of Vengi king Rajaraja Narendra, who was closely related to the Chola clan through his mother Kundavai, a daughter of Rajaraja Chola, Athirajindra and Virarajendra Chola intervened in Vengi succession disputes. In a palace coup, Saktivarman II seized the Vengi throne.
  • The Cholas desired to reestablish the Chola influence in Vengi. Saktivarman II was assassinated, but Vijayaditya, Saktivarman's father, ascended to the throne and repulsed Chola attempts to depose him.
  • Despite the failure of this attempt to gain complete control of Vengi, Virarajendra found another Chalukya ally in Vikramaditya by marrying his daughter to him.
  • During these intrigues, Rajaraja Narendra's son, prince Rajendra Chalukya, later known as Kulothunga I, sought to become Vengi king, believing that Vijayaditya had usurped the throne that was rightfully his.
  • The Cholas most likely assisted him in his efforts. Kulothunga Chola, thwarted in his attempts by his uncle Vijayaditya, carved himself a small dominion near Baster District in Chhattisgarh state and bided his time.
  • With the death of Virarajendra, an opportunity arose, and Rajendra Chalukya moved quickly to seize the Chola throne.
Athirajendra’s Death

Athirajendra’s Death

  • Virarajendra Chola died not long after marrying his daughter to Chalukya Vikramaditya VI.
  • Vikramaditya marched to Kanchipuram immediately after learning of trouble and revolt in the Chola country following the emperor's death.
  • Then he went to Gangaikonda Cholapuram and destroyed the enemy forces and installed the prince (Athirajendra) on the throne.'
  • Vikramaditya VI returned to his country after spending a month in the Chola capital, apparently satisfied that peace had been restored.
  • Within a few days of his return, news of Athirajendra's death in a new outbreak of rebellion reached him.
  • The news also informed him that Rajendra Narendra's son and Rajendra Chola's grandson, had seized the Chola throne and assumed the title of Kulottunga Chola I.
  • Vikramaditya immediately marched against Kulothunga. Someshvara II, the Western Chalukya king, also joined him.
  • Kulottunga Chola's ascension marks the first time since Vijayalaya Chola that a person from the dynasty's maternal lineage has ascended to the Chola throne.
  • Other Chola descendants survived for many centuries (via two distinct branches descended from Rajadhiraja Chola I's many sons and Rajendra Chola II's six sons).
Religious Trouble

Athirajendra - Religious Trouble

  • Attempts have also been made to link these internal disturbances in the Chola kingdom to the story of Ramanuja's persecution at the hands of the Cholas.
  • Based on early biographical works on Ramanuja, it is possible to assume that the Chola monarch who persecuted Ramanuja and his followers was Athirajendra or his father Virarajendra.
  • According to Nilakanta Sastri and Krimikanta Chola, Ramanuja's persecutor was Adhirajendra, who died in a local Vaishnava uprising.
  • This identification lends credence to the content of Divyasuricharitam, which states that the Chola family or line ended when the king was cursed for being intolerant.
Conclusion

Conclusion

After Virarajendra's death in 1070, there was a contest for the throne, and Athrajendra, the heir apparent, took the throne. He had a brief and uneventful reign. Rajendra II succeeded Adhirajendra as Kulottunga Chola. Adhirajendra most likely did not leave any issues for his successor. As a result, the throne passed to Rajendra II, whose claim was based on close matrimonial ties between his family and the Cholas.
