Aditya I (871 - 907 CE) - Important Ruler of Chola Dynasty - Medieval India History Notes

Aditya I, Vijayalaya's son, was the Chola king who expanded the Chola dominions by conquering the Pallavas and occupying the Western Ganga Kingdom. He achieved significant military success. At the battle of Shripurambiyam, he allied with the Pallavas and defeated Pandyas and received some territories in the Tanjore area. Later he killed his Pallava overload Aparajita thus bringing Tondaimandalam (Southern Tamil country) under his control. He also allied with the Cheras. He entered into a matrimonial alliance with the Pallava by marrying the Pallava princess. In this article, we will discuss Aditya I (871 - 907 CE) which will be helpful for UPSC exam preparation.

Background

Aditya Chola - Background

  • Aditya Chola I was Vijayalaya's son and succeeded him after his death.
  • As his father was ailing with age-related problems, he led the Chola army at Sripurambiyam.
  • He defeated the Pandya forces in this war. Aparajita won, but Aditya Chola reaped the greatest benefit.
  • Aditya Chola I attacked the Pallavas and killed Aparajita a few years later.
  • This marked the end of the Pallava Dynasty, and the Pallavas' entire territory was annexed to the Chola Kingdom.
  • Aditya Chola I consolidated the Cholas' power even further.
  • He was a devout Shiva devotee who built a number of Shiva temples on the Cauvery River's banks. He had a friendly relationship with Cheras.
  • He died in 907 AD, and his son Parantaka Chola I took his place.
War with Pallavas

War with Pallavas

Pallava Civil War

  • During the Chola invasion, the Pandya king Varagunavarman II became an ally of Nripatunga, the eldest son of Pallava King Nandivarman III.
  • When Nandivarman died in 869 CE, disagreements arose between Nripatunga and his stepbrother Aparajita, most likely due to the latter's ambition to rule the kingdom on his own. Both sides sought allies.
  • Nripatunga retained the support of Varaguna Pandya, whereas Aparajita formed alliances with Ganga king Prithvipathi I and Aditya Chola I.
  • Around 885 CE, the opposing armies met at Thirupurambiyam, near Kumbakonam.
  • Aparajita Pallava and Aditya I Chola routed the armies of the Pandyas and Nripatunga Pallava, but some inscriptions simply stated that Nirpatunga was not alive during the war.
  • It was the battle for legal supremacy in South India between the Pallvas and the Pandiyas.

Invasion of Pallavas

  • Aditya I Chola, dissatisfied with his subordinate position, planned and carried out an attack on his former overlord, Pallava king Aparajita, in 903 CE, the 32nd year of his reign.
  • During the ensuing battle, Aditya pounced on Aparajita while he was mounted on an elephant and killed him.
  • That marked the end of Pallava rule in Tondaimandalam (north Tamil Nadu), and the Pallava kingdom as a whole became Chola territory.
  • This effectively ended the once-mighty Pallava empire in South Indian history.
  • Aditya I earned the moniker "Tondainadu pavina Rajakesarivarman" for his conquest of Tondaimandalam.

Relation with Cheras

  • During Aditya I's reign, friendly relations appear to have existed between the Cheras (Perumals) and the Cholas.
  • Sthanu Ravi, a Chera contemporary, was a partner in Chola king Rajakesari Varma's Kongu campaign (central Tamil Nadu).
  • King Rajakesari Varma was also known as Aditya or Srikantha Chola.
  • It is known that Aditya I's son, Parantaka I, married a Chera princess.
Contribution to Temples

Contribution to Temples

  • Aditya I is known to have constructed 108 Shiva temples along the banks of the Kaveri.
  • According to the Kanyakumari inscription, Aditya I was also known by the surname Kodandarama.
  • There is a temple near Tondaimanarrur called Kodandarameshvaraa, which is also known as Adityesvara in its inscriptions. Aditya I appears to have built this.
  • During the years 872–900, he also revised the Annamalaiyar sanctum in Thiruvaannamalai.
  • Aditya was also a patron of Sureswara and Prabhakara, who were students of Kumarila Bhatta, Adisankaracharya's favourite student.
Conclusion

Conclusion

Aditya I died in Tondaimanarrur in 907 CE. Over his ashes, his son Parantaka I constructed a Shiva temple. Ilangon Pichchi and Vayiri Akkan alias Tribhuvana Madeviyar, Aditya I's queens, predeceased him. In addition to these two queens, an inscription shows that Aditya I had a mistress named Nangai Sattaperumanar. Aditya I ruled for a long and successful reign, laying the groundwork for the Chola empire's future greatness.
