  • Sir William Hawkins was an English East India Company ambassador.

  • In August 1608, William Hawkins landed in Surat, but the Portuguese kidnapped him as soon as his ship, the Hector, came in.
  • Hawkins was told that the "King of Portugal" owns all of the ports and that no one may enter India without permission from the Portuguese king. The captain was able to obtain a pass for his voyage to Agra in some way.
  • From Surat, William Hawkins traveled to Agra to serve at the court of Mughal Emperor Jahangir. He was assisted midway by the Viceroy of Burhanpur, and on April 16, 1609, he arrived at Agra after much work, toil, and danger.
  • Hawkins spent two years as an emissary in the court of Mughal Emperor Jahangir.

Why Captain Hawkins Came to India?

  • The English East India Company dispatched William Hawkins to Surat to acquire formal approval for the establishment of an English factory.
  • Emperor Akbar was a contemporary of Queen Elizabeth I, and hence little known in England, but when the captain came, the throne was occupied by a different personality. The new emperor Jahangir, on the other hand, greeted Hawkins with traditional Indian hospitality and kindness.
  • Captain's letter was read in court with the assistance of a Portuguese Jesuit, and he was led to a private room for additional conversations.
  • The conversation was held in Turkish since both William Hawkins and Jahangir, as well as his few ministers, were fluent in the language.
  • For constructing up the factory, Emperor Jahangir expected a hefty maintenance charge, as well as Hawkins' assistance in combating Portuguese intrigues.
  • Hawkins was able to get a foothold in Jahangir's court, and over time he became so close to the "brilliant drunkard" monarch that no Europeans had ever been before. William Hawkins was dubbed the "English Khan" by Jahangir.
  • By doing all of Jahangir's favors, William Hawkins was able to persuade the emperor to give the requisite license for an English Factory in Surat. However, the award was revoked due to the Portuguese Viceroy's pressure.
    • Jahangir convinced Hawkins to marry a woman from his court.
    • William wished to overturn the emperor's edict about the granting of a license, so he followed Jahangir's suggestion and married Mariam Khan, an American Christian woman, for his good. Mariam Khan was the daughter of an important merchant in Akbar's court.
  • Because the Portuguese influence on the king was unassailable, William Hawkins fell out of favor with the emperor after a year or two. As a result, Hawkins was free to leave the kingdom.
  • William Hawkings set off from Agra on November 2nd, 1611, and arrived in Surat three months later and died two years later, in 1614, on the way back to England.
  • Later, Sir Thomas Roe came to the court of the renowned Mughal Emperor Jahangir at Agra in 1615. He spent four years in Agra.
