Francois Bernier (1620 - 1688)
- Francois Bernier was born into a farming family in Joue, near Gonnord, Anjou, France.
- Bernier was orphaned as a child and raised by his uncle. Later, he travelled to Paris at the age of 15 to study at the Collège de Clermont.
- He embarked on his twelve-year voyage to the East at the age of 36, covering Palestine, Egypt, Cairo, Arabia, Ethiopia, and India.
- Bernier visited Syria and Palestine in 1654 and continued his journey to Egypt in 1656 when he suffered the Plague. Instead of continuing to Abyssinia after his recuperation, Bernier chose to proceed to Surat and ultimately set foot on Indian land in 1658 or early 1659.

Francois Bernier’s Visit to India
- Bernier's expedition to Abyssinia was diverted to India, and he appears to have reached India by coincidence. In 1658 A.D., he set out for India and arrived in Surat.
- On his route from Surat to Agra, he met the vanquished Prince Dara Shikoh (who had fought his brother Aurangzeb at Deora) and became acquainted with the Mughal emperors.
- Dara was looking for a doctor for his wife. Dara Shikoh was so impressed by Bernier's ability to relieve the princess's discomfort that he chose him as his personal physician.
- Francois took refugee with Daneshmand Khan (Mughal Nobleman), who escorted him to Aurangzeb court when Dara Shikoh left owing to treason from his servants.
- Bernier was given the opportunity to visit Kashmir on an inspection trip by Aurangzeb.
- Following his return from Kashmir, Francois travelled to Bengal, the empire's opposite extremity.
- In 1668, he returned to Surat to write a book on Indian trade and left India in 1669 to continue his voyage to Paris.
- Bernier spent 12 years in Aurangzeb's court and wrote a book called 'Travels in the Mogul Empire' on his experiences. Francois has exhaustively and intricately detailed the political intrigues, military strategies and tactics, Shah Jahan's four sons' succession war, social and economic aspects of the empire, and its geographical and strategic scope.
