Karka (972 - 973) - Important Ruler of Rashtrakutas - Medieval India History Notes

Karka II (reigned 972–973 CE) took over the Rashtrakuta throne from his uncle Kottigga Amoghavarsha. By this time, the once-mighty Rashtrakuta empire was in decline. The Pallavas were defeated by his capable feudatory, Western Ganga King Marasimha II Satyavakya. However, the weaknesses created by Paramara King Siyaka II's earlier plunder of Manyakheta exposed the Rashtrakutas to further depredation, and they did not survive for long. During this period of uncertainty, Chalukya Tailapa II declared independence and assassinated Karka II. In this article, we will discuss Karka (972-973), important ruler of Rashtrakuta Dynasty which will be helpful for UPSC exam preparation.

Background

Karka - Background

  • Karakaraja ascended to the throne shortly after the death of his uncle Khottiga at the hands of the invading Malwa king in C.E 972. This demonstrates that the kingdom was not annexed, but rather plundered and destroyed to some extent.
  • The Malwa invasion severely weakened the Rashtrakutas, and the Chalukya king Tailapa II took advantage of the opportunity to launch an attack in 973 C.E., completing the destruction begun by Siyaka II of Malwa.
  • Through this act, the Chalukyas regained lost power and became the dominant dynasty of the Deccan, with their capital at Kalyani.
  • C.E 973 marks the end of the Rashtrakuta dynasty's primary Deccan branch.
  • An inscription by Vijjaya of the Kalachuri dynasty, the Rashtrakutas' primary feudatory for two centuries, confirms that Karakraja II was killed by Tailapa during the Chalukya invasion.
  • Two copper plates dated C.E 997 and 1008 of Aparajita of the Shilara dynasty, which was a confirmed feudatory, indicate that he was now independent of the Rashtrakutas.
  • Immediately following this defeat, Peramanadi Marasimha of the Ganga dynasty, which had been allied with the Rashtrakutas through matrimony for several generations, attempted to recoup Rashtrakuta strength and install Indraraja IV, Krishnaraja III's grandson, and his own cousin, on the throne.
  • The attempt failed, and the powerful dynasty of the Deccan Rashtrakutas died in disgrace.
Reign of Khottiga

Reign of Khottiga/ Start of Decline

  • Krishnara III's immediate younger brother Jagattunga had predeceased him, so the throne passed to the next brother Khottiga.
  • In C.E. 972, Siyaka II of the Paramara dynasty, the powerful king of Malwa, attacked and defeated Khottiga before plundering the capital Manyakheta.
  • Khottiga was killed in this battle, as confirmed by Pushpadanta's book. This was the beginning of the Deccan Rashtrakutas' demise, and they never recovered.
  • It did not take long for the dynasty to collapse and fade into obscurity after this point.
  • Khottiga died without any male heirs, clearing the way for his younger brother Nirupama's son to ascend to the throne.
  • Karka ascended to the throne shortly after the death of his uncle Khottiga at the hands of the invading Malwa king in C.E 972.
Conclusion

Conclusion

The Rashtrakuta dynasty came to an end in 973 AD, when the last ruler, Kakka II (or Karka), was assassinated by Tailapa II (a descendant of the old Chalukya empire), who established the Chalukyas of Kalyani dynasty (also known as Later or Western Chalukyas). The unpredictability of Indian history continued, with the fall of a once-glory dynasty merely the beginning of another that would scale the same heights of power and, at times, be brought to an end at the hands of lesser mortals. The underlying commonality in the historical theme remains constant.
