Govinda II (774 - 780) - Important Ruler of Rashtrakutas - Medieval India History Notes

Govinda II (reigned 774–780 CE) was the Rashtrakuta Empire's second emperor after Krishna I. Govinda II, Krishna I's eldest son, delegated administration to his younger brother Dhruva Dharavarsha (who was also known as Nirupama). Apart from his devotion to sensual pleasures and an invasion of Vengi and subsequent defeat of Eastern Chalukya ruler Vishnuvardhana IV (during his father Krishna I's reign as Rashtrakuta emperor), little is known about Govinda II. According to the Paithan copper plate inscription, Govinda II's attempt to reclaim lost control of the empire with the assistance of neighbouring Kings of Malwa, Kanchi, and Vengi failed, and Dhruva Dharavarsha firmly established control of the empire. In this article, we will discuss Govinda II (774-780), important ruler of Rashtrakutas which will be helpful for UPSC exam preparation.

Background

Govinda II - Background

  • Krishnaraja I died between 772 and 775 CE and was succeeded on the throne by his son, Yuvaraja Govinda II.
  • As a prince, he conquered Vengi, the eastern coastal district located between the Krishna and Godavari rivers, and annexed it to the expanding Rashtrakuta kingdom.
  • Although two copper plates from his reign (one dated 775 and the other 779 C.E.) have been discovered, they do not mention the king by name, but only those of his brother Dhruvaraja and his son Karakaraja.
  • According to the copper grant discovered in Wardha, Govindaraja was overly fond of the good life and women and entrusted the governance of the kingdom to his younger brother Nirupama, one of the titles of Dhruvaraja.
  • Dhruvaraja later deposed him from the throne. Govindaraja attempted unsuccessfully to reclaim the throne with the help of the kings of Malwa and Kanchi, but the combined armies were defeated by Dhruvaraja.
  • In Shaka S. (783 C.E.), King Indrayudha reigned in the north; Krishna's son Shrivallabha reigned in the south; Vatsaraja of Avanti reigned in the east; and Varaha reigned in the west, according to Jain author Jinasena of the Digambara sect.
  • Indrayudha is almost certainly the Rashtrakuta king of Kanauj, and Krishna's son could be Govindaraja or Dhruvaraja, as the Rashtrakuta kings of the Deccan were also titled Vallabha.
  • Following that, Pratihara Nagabhatta II, the son of Vatsaraja, seized the kingdom of Kanauj, defeating Indrayudha's sons and successor, Chakrayudha.

Govinda II - Features

  • In the Alas plates, Govinda II is known as Prabhutavarsha (Profuse Rainer) and Vikramavaloka (the Heroic Man).
  • His name is omitted from some of the line's later grants.
  • It was due to a civil war for the throne between him and his younger brother Dhruva, who was the governor of Nasik and Khandesh.
  • Govinda II's first war with his brother ended in disaster.
  • He then allied with the Rashtrakutas' traditional foes, the Pallava ruler of Kanchi, the Ganga king, the king of Vengi, and the ruler of Malava, but was defeated in a battle.
  • Dhruva won the battle and took over the throne.
Conclusion

Conclusion

Krishna I’s eventful career came to an end within a very short time and he was succeeded by his son Govinda II who ruled for some time. His worthlessness as a ruler and his lack of interest in administration led to his deposition by his brother Dhruva who ascended the throne himself.
