The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) launched the Standards & Labeling programme for equipment and appliances in 2006, to provide consumers with information about the energy-saving and thus cost-saving potential of the relevant marketed product. The BEE energy efficiency labelling programmes are designed to reduce the energy consumption of appliances while maintaining the services they provide to consumers. The scheme is used for 29 pieces of equipment/appliances, ten of which are mandatory. The other appliances are currently in the voluntary labelling phase. Since 2007, these labelling programmes have saved an estimated 12000 MW.
