UGC NET 2015 Paper 1 Question Paper (27-Dec-2015)
The correct answer is

Ego

The question describes Sigmund Freud's structural model of personality, which divides the psyche into three interacting parts - the id, the ego and the superego - each governed by a different principle.

The ego is the part that deals with reality. It operates on the reality principle, mediating between the instinctual demands of the id, the moral constraints of the superego, and the constraints of the outside world. It works across the conscious, preconscious and unconscious mind, and it realistically weighs the costs and benefits of an action before deciding whether to act on an impulse or hold it back. That is exactly the description in the stem.

The id operates on the pleasure principle, seeking immediate gratification of instincts without regard for reality or consequences. The superego is the moral conscience, embodying internalised ideals and prohibitions and pressing for perfection. 'Innerself' is not a term in Freud's model. Only the ego plays the reality-dealing, cost-benefit-weighing role described.

Hence the answer is the ego.
