When we judge someone on the basis of our perception of the group to which he or she belongs, we are using the shortcut, called ________
Stereotyping
People simplify the complex task of judging others by using perceptual shortcuts, and each shortcut has a distinct name depending on how the simplification works.
When we judge someone on the basis of our perception of the group to which he or she belongs, we are stereotyping. The shortcut here is to take a generalisation about a whole category of people - a nationality, an age group, an occupation - and apply it to an individual, rather than assessing that person on their own qualities. Because the judgement is transferred from group to individual, this is precisely stereotyping.
Selective perception is a different shortcut: we notice only those parts of a situation that fit our interests, background or expectations. The halo effect is drawing a general impression of a person from a single characteristic, such as assuming a well-spoken candidate is competent in everything. The contrast effect is evaluating a person relative to others encountered just before, rather than on absolute terms. None of these involves group membership as the basis of judgement.
Hence judging someone by the group they belong to is called stereotyping.
