In this article, we will discuss Vikramaditya I (655–680 CE) which will be helpful for UPSC exam preparation.

Background

Vikramaditya I - Background

  • Vikramaditya I was the third son of Pulakesin II.
  • He set himself the task of repelling the Pallava invasion and restoring the unity of his father's kingdom with the assistance of his maternal grandfather Bhuvikarma or Durvineet of the Western Ganga Dynasty.
  • He was able to put an end to Pallava's thirteen-year occupation and capture of Vatapi.
  • He defeated his brothers and other feudatories who sought to split the empire.
  • Vikramaditya I then declared himself Chalukya king in 655 AD.
  • He bestowed the viceroyalty of Lata in southern Gujarat on his loyal younger brother Jayasimhavarma.
  • He defeated Mahendravarman II (Pallava king) in AD 668 and continued his capture of Kanchi for about five to six years.
  • During this time, he plundered the Chola, Pandya, and Kerala kingdoms but did not annex any territory (his army remained in Thiruchirapalli).
  • Vikramaditya I took on the dynastic titles of Satyashraya ("refuge of truth") and Shri-prithvi-vallabha.
  • He was also known as Maharajadhiraja, Rajadhiraja, Parameshvara and Bhattaraka.
  • Vikramaditya I, in addition to the usual Chalukyan titles, assumed the title Rajamalla, implying that he became the sovereign of Mallas, i.e. the Pallavas.
Battle with Pallavas

Battle with Pallavas

  • Vikramaditya maintained his animosity toward Narasimhavarman's son and successor, Mahendravarman II, and later his son, Paramesvaravarman I.
  • Vikramaditya I marched into Tamil country to avenge his father's defeat at the hands of the Pallava during the reign of Paramesvaravarman I
  • The Pallava ruler did not anticipate a punitive raid from Vikramaditya. However, the raid did take place, and the Chalukyan approached Kanchi, prompting the Pallava to flee.
  • The invaders followed the fleeing Pallava to Uraiyur, beyond the banks of the Kaveri, where a meeting between the successful invading Chalukyan and his friend the Pandya may have taken place.
  • To repel the invader, Paramesvarava gathered a large army and fought at Vilande Bhuvikrama, the Ganga accomplice of Vikramaditya.
  • This battle was won by the Pallava king (in 670 AD).
  • Then Paramesvara dispatched an expedition into Chalukya territory.
  • The Pallavas defeated the Chalukyas in the subsequent battle of Puruvalanallur in 674 AD.
  • Vikramaditya's son and grandson, Vinayaditya and Vijayaditya, led the defeated Chalukyan army.
  • Pallavas occupied many Chalukya territories before fleeing when the Chalukyas agreed to pay yearly tributes.
Conclusion
