The warm subtropical regions of the southern oceans give rise to the southeast trade winds. As they cross the equator, they blow in a south-westerly direction. These trade winds are principally caused by the Coriolis effect and Ferrel's law. These winds keep the South Equatorial Current flowing westward, where it splits into two branches: one that heads north and enters the Caribbean as the Guiana (Guyana) Current, with a small amount of water from the North Equatorial Current, and the other that heads south as the Brazil Current, a weak counterpart to the Gulf Stream.
