Ramapala (1072-1126 CE) - Important Ruler of Pala Dynasty - Medieval India History Notes

Ramapala (1072-1126 CE) was the last great ruler of the Pala Dynasty. He was the successor of Shurapala II. He was a bold and ambitious king who was determined to restore the Palas' supremacy and expand his territorial possessions following the fiasco of losing the kingdom to a hill tribe. His most significant contribution to the Pala dynasty was the recapture of Varendra (northern Bengal) from the Kaivartas, giving the Palas' control in Bengal a new lease of life. Ramapala committed ritual suicide by drowning in the Ganges after placing his son Kumarapala on the throne. This article will explain to you about the Ramapala (1072-1126 CE) which will be helpful in History preparation for the UPSC Civil service exam.

  • He also fought the Ganga ruler for control of modern-day Orissa, which the Ganga’s ruler succeeded to recapture only after the death of Ramapala.
  • He maintained close connections with Chola ruler Kulottunga, to obtain support against the mutual adversaries, the Ganas and the Chalukyas.
  • He also used a matrimonial alliance to thwart the aggressive plans of Gahadavala (present day UP and Bihar region) monarch Govindachandra.
Conclusion

Conclusion

Ramapala had a successful reign, reclaiming the lost dominion and leaving the empire in a much more stable state than when he first arrived. He was able to get the cooperation of the local feudatories and reclaim the lost provinces. He expanded Pala's authority into Kamarupa, rose against the Gahadavalas' rising supremacy and became involved in Orissa politics. He gave new life to the declining Pala power. After his death, forces of disintegration and disagreement took hold, which his successors couldn't handle, leading to the fall of the Pala dynasty.
