Nepenthes is a genus of insectivores plants sometimes referred to as monkey cups or tropical pitcher plants. There are about 140 species, most of which are indigenous to Australia, Madagascar, and Southeast Asia. Although some are epiphytes, Nepenthes species are perennial herbaceous plants that usually flourish in extremely acidic soil. It was long believed that monkeys drank rainwater from the pitchers, hence the name "monkey cups."
