Aldrovanda also referred to as the waterwheel plant is an insectivores plant. It is the only surviving species in the flowering plant genus of the family Droseraceae. This plant uses traps to catch small aquatic creatures. The traps are organized in whorls around a stem that is in the center and free to float. This is one of the few plant species with the ability to move rapidly. The only species of Aldrovanda, a rootless, free-floating aquatic plant, is found in the salt marshes of the Sunderbans, south of Calcutta. It can also grow in bodies of fresh water like lakes, tanks, and ponds.   • This species was introduced to small backyard ponds in the states of New Jersey, Virginia, and the Catskills of New York by carnivorous plant hobbyists in the 1970s.

  • The aquatic plant Aldrovanda vesiculosa has no roots. A brief protoroot forms in seedlings.
  • However, this becomes old and fails to progress further. The plant comprises 6 to 40 cm long floating stalks.
  • Along the central stem of the plant, the 2-3 mm trap leaves develop in whorls of 5 to 9, closely following one another.
  • The petioles, which include air sacs that help with floating, hold the real traps.
  • While the other end of the stem continues to die off, one end continues to grow.
  • Particularly in Japanese populations, growth occurs relatively quickly each day, and under ideal circumstances, one or more new whorls are created each day.

  • Aldrovanda vesiculosa has traps that resemble tiny (1/12 inch), translucent flytraps that emerge at the end of a wide petiole.

  • Many hook-like teeth (similar to the flytrap's teeth) line the outside edges of the trap lobes, and these teeth interlock when the trap closes around the prey.
  • There are about forty long trigger hairs inside the trap that, when triggered once or more, force the clamshell trap to close.
  • Digestive glands that secrete acids to disintegrate a prey's soft tissues for absorption are located next to the trigger hairs.

  • The cotyledons, or seed leaves, serve as a source of energy storage for growing seeds and stay inside the seed coat.
