Which one of the following is not a characteristic of the ‘Hot - Stove Rule’ of disciplinary action ?

UGC NET 2017 Paper 3 Geography Question Paper (05-Nov-2017)
The correct answer is

Discipline is personal.

Option 4 — Discipline is personal is correct (i.e. it is NOT a characteristic of the Hot-Stove Rule).

Douglas McGregor’s Hot-Stove Rule compares disciplinary action to touching a hot stove. The analogy yields four features that good discipline should share, and being impersonal is central to it — the stove burns everyone alike, so it hurts the act, not the person. Hence “discipline is personal” contradicts the rule.

Hot-Stove featureMeaning
Immediate (burn)Consequence follows the offence at once.
WarningThe glowing stove — rules fore-warn of consequences (option 2).
ConsistentIt burns every time and everyone equally (option 3).
ImpersonalAimed at the wrong act, not the individual (option 1).

Why the others are correct characteristics: options 1, 2 and 3 restate the impersonal, warning and consistency principles respectively, so they cannot be the answer.

Takeaway: the Hot-Stove Rule demands immediate, forewarned, consistent and impersonal discipline — never personal.
