SSC CGL Income Tax Inspector is a Group ‘C’ post in the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) headed by the Ministry of Finance, Government of India. It is one of the most preferable jobs for SSC CGL aspirants. SSC CGL Income Tax Inspector: Training and Job Profile

The Income Tax department has several divisions like Raids and Surveys, TDS, Corporate Taxation, International Taxation etc. Candidates selected as Income Tax Inspectors are posted to any of these divisions all over India. After Selection, the Income Tax Inspector will undergo Induction training.

The training period for an Income Tax Inspector is as follows.

  • Training is mandatory and the 3 months training will be conducted at Direct Taxes Regional Training Institute (DTRTI). During training time, there will be lectures on the responsibilities of the Income-tax Inspector, the basics of the Income- tax system, SOPs for conducting raids and surveys etc.

The work profile of an Income Tax Inspector is mainly categorised as Assessment section and Non-Assessment Section. Every 2 years, these working areas can be Interchanged.

  • In the Assessment Section, the Income Tax Inspector handles all the desk job activities like assessment and verification of Income tax returns filed by citizens, executes TDS-related queries, handles ITR Refund claims etc. Have to prepare audit reports and also daily departmental file work.
  • The Income Tax officers posted in the Non-Assessment section are usually conducting scheduled raids and surveys for income tax cases. Assist senior officers in reporting to the ministry of finance ie ITO, Joint secretary etc.

SSC CGL Income Tax Inspector: Selection Process

According to the official notification released by the authorities for the exam, the SSC CGL selection process has been updated. The details about the selection process for the Income Tax Inspector post are given below.

  • Tier 1 exam is compulsory for all candidates.
  • In the Tier 2 exam, candidates applying for the post of Income Tax Inspector post need to appear only for Paper I consisting of three sections. 
  • Each of the three sections is further divided into two modules. All the sections and their modules are elaborated below.
    • Section 1: Mathematical Abilities (Module 1) and Reasoning and General Intelligence (Module 2).
    • Section 2: English Language and Comprehension (Module 1) and General Awareness (Module 2).
    • Section 3: Computer Knowledge Test (Module 1) and Data Entry Speed Test (Module 2).
  • The qualifying candidates will undergo document verification and medical examination for final selection.
