Mar 13, 2026

This is one of the major concerns of an SSC CGL applicant. Many of you struggle to get the exact amounts and hunt all the information available on the internet but still end up with no specific number. Getting to know the exact salary of the desired SSC CGL post is quite a challenge until you have a very dear friend who is ready to share the salary slip. Though jokes apart, we are here to discuss the numbers and give you a fair idea of how your salary structure will be once you qualify for SSC CGL.

Highlights

  • SSC CGL Salary has increased due to an increase in DA (Dearness Allowance) from 38% to 42% in 2023.
  • Revision of salary happens every 10 years by the Pay Commission.
  • Variations in allowances of HRA, DA, and TA affect the In-hand Salary.

In addition to the basic salary, the following are the elements that add to your salary and make it a home takeaway:

  • House Rent Allowance (H.R.A) that depends on the posting city,
  • Dearness Allowance (DA), and
  • Travel Allowance (TA) depends on your post and which city you are placed in.

The major factor that affects the salary is the city that you are posted in as all the elements of the salary vary accordingly. The cities are classified as X, Y, and Z.

  • X Cities: Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Pune.
  • Y Cities: Towns with a population of over 5 lakh
  • Z Cities: Rural areas

The following major deductions take place from the salary:

  • NPS (National Pension Scheme)- 10% of the basic salary
  • Employee Provident Fund (EPF)- 12% of the basic pay
  • Education Cess- 3% of basic pay
  • TDS

What is the Dearness Allowance (DA) in salary?

The Dearness Allowance is an element added to the salary, which is calculated based on inflation and allowance paid to civil servant employees. This is paid to some private sector employees and civil servant pensioners too in India. DA is calculated as a percentage of an Indian citizen's basic salary to mitigate the impact of inflation on the employees and is decided by the Union Cabinet.

The DA has been recently increased by the government on March 7, 2026 to 50% of the basic pay.

SSC CGL Salary 2026 FAQs

Question: Which is the highest-paid Job profile in SSC CGL?

Answer: The SI (Sub-Inspector) in the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) gets the highest pay and not the AAO (Assistant Audit Officer) in the CAG (Comptroller and Auditor General of India). Even though the basic salary for AAO has a pay level of 8 which is higher than that of SI in CBI which has a pay level of 7, because of a few extra incentives, like 20% extra of the basic salary, a Sub-Inspector in the CBI draws more in hand monthly salary than an AAO does after qualifying SSC CGL.
