SSC CGL Tier 1 is conducted in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode with objective-type multiple-choice questions. Each correct answer carries 2 marks, while 0.50 marks are deducted for every incorrect answer. The 2026 pattern also provides a 15-minute sectional timer for each subject.

Paper I is compulsory for all candidates. Paper II is only for candidates shortlisted for JSO/Statistical Investigator Grade-II, while Paper III applies to candidates shortlisted for Assistant Audit Officer/Assistant Accounts Officer posts. Computer Knowledge Test and DEST are qualifying in nature.

There is a negative marking of 1 mark for each wrong answer in Sections I, II and III of Paper I, while 0.50 marks are deducted for each wrong answer in Paper II and Paper III.
