  • In 1509, Krishna Deva Raya ascended to the throne in Vijayanagar and launched a conquest campaign against the southern territories of the Gajapati empire of Odisha.
  • In response, Prataparudra Deva rushed to meet him with his own army.
  • While Prataparudra was occupied on the southern front, the Sultan of Bengal Hussain Shah and his general Gaji Ismail took advantage of the situation to launch an attack on the kingdom's eastern frontier.
  • Hussain Shah's army invaded Orissa all the way to Puri, destroying numerous Hindu temples and shrines along the way.
  • Prataparudra quickly continued on to Puri, forcing the Sultan and his army to flee.
  • Prataparudra was involved in a lengthy war with the Vijayanagar king over the next several years.
  • Krishna Deva Raya attacked Kondavidu in the Guntur district in 1515.

Q2: Evaluate the reasons for the decline of the Gajapati Kingdom after Prataparudra Deva’s death.

Answer: The decline of the Gajapati Kingdom after Prataparudra Deva’s death can be attributed to a combination of internal and external factors. Militarily, after Prataparudra’s death, the Gajapati Kingdom faced significant challenges in maintaining the territorial integrity of its empire. The absence of a strong and capable successor led to weak governance, and the kingdom struggled to defend itself against external forces. The Mughal Empire and regional sultans, including the Sultanate of Bengal, were powerful threats that undermined the Gajapati Kingdom's hold on its territories.
Internally, the weakening of central authority due to ineffective leadership, administrative breakdowns, and succession disputes contributed to the disintegration of the kingdom. This instability made it difficult for the Gajapati rulers to control the regions they had conquered, and over time, their influence waned.
Additionally, the rise of Maratha power and the increased influence of the Mughal Empire in the eastern region of India diminished the Gajapati kingdom’s strategic importance. The Gajapati kingdom gradually became a tributary state to the Mughals, further weakening its political and military standing.

Prataparudra Deva's reign saw the consolidation of the Vaishnavite tradition, and he encouraged religious festivals, rituals, and art forms associated with Lord Jagannath. This not only strengthened Odisha’s religious identity but also promoted the state’s cultural heritage, fostering a unique blend of religion and art. His efforts ensured that the Gajapati dynasty’s legacy was tied to the cultural and spiritual identity of Odisha.
