Lakes contain nearly 90% of the world's liquid surface freshwater and play an important role in the global carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycles. Lakes and their watersheds are significantly underrepresented in both protected areas and conservation funding. Participatory Conservation of Lakes

Naini Lake

  • The Naini Lake serves as the sole source of drinking water for Nainital, a popular tourist destination in Uttarakhand.
  • The increasing influx of tourists, as well as urban waste that finds its way into the lake, is having a negative impact on water quality.
  • To protect the water body, residents have implemented a scientific garbage disposal system, known as 'Mission Butterfly' by the Nainital Lake Conservation Project.

Conservation of Dal Lake

  • Dal Lake is located near the Tota Rani village in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir and also India's northernmost state.
  • It is situated at a height of 1,775 meters above sea level.
  • The lake is 6.4 kilometres long and 4 kilometres wide, with a total area of around 10 square miles.
  • Causeways separate the wetland into four basins: Gagribal, Lokut Dal, Bod Dal, and Nagin (although Nagin is also considered as an independent lake).
  • Rup Lank (or Char Chinari) and Sona Lank are the islands in the middle of Lokut-dal and Bod-dal, respectively.
  • Dal Lake, also known as “Srinagar’s Jewel” is a popular tourist destination in Jammu and Kashmir which attracts thousands of visitors. But in recent years, due to anthropogenic pressures such as encroachment, water extraction, untreated residential sewage, and fertilizer runoff, the lake is in threat.
  • According to ancient documents, in 1200 AD, the lake had a surface area of 75 square kilometres and this was reduced to 10.56 sq km in 1983.

National Plan for the Conservation of Aquatic Ecosystems (NPCA)

  • The NPCA is a conservation programme for both wetlands and lakes.
  • It is a centrally sponsored scheme that is currently being implemented by the MoEFCC and was created by combining the National Lake Conservation Plan and the National Wetlands Conservation Programme.
  • The central assistance under the NPCA scheme is based on proposals received from state governments that are in accordance with the guidelines and budget availability.

National Lake Conservation Plan

  • Since 2001, the Ministry of Environment and Forests has been implementing the National Lake Conservation Plan (NLCP) to conserve and manage polluted and degraded lakes in urban and semi-urban areas.
  • The National Lake Conservation Plan and the National Wetlands Conservation Programme were combined into an integrated scheme, NPCA, to avoid overlap, promote better synergies, and ensure conservation and management work.
