He was also known as Malik Firuz. He established his capital in Khilughari, just outside of Delhi. He conquered much of Northern India between 1290 and 1296. In this article, we will discuss the Important Ruler of the Khalji Dynasty Jalal-ud-din Firoz Khilji (1290-1296 AD) which will be helpful for UPSC exam preparation.

Background

Jalal-ud-din Firoz Khilji (1290-1296 AD) - Background

  • Jalal ud din Firuz Khilji was the founder of the Khilji Dynasty.
  • He began his career as a Mamluk dynasty officer and rose to prominence under Sultan Muizzuddin Qaiqabad.
  • Following the paralysis of Qaiqabad, a group of nobles nominated his infant son Shamsuddin Kayumars as the new Sultan and attempted to assassinate Jalal-ud-din.
  • Instead, Jalal-ud-din assassinated them and took over as regent. He toppled Kayumars and became Sultan a few months later.
  • He was recognised as a mild-mannered, humble, and friendly monarch by the common people.
  • To avoid clashes with the old Turkic nobles of the imperial capital Delhi, he reigned from Kilokhri (near Delhi) for the first year of his reign.
  • Several nobles saw him as a weak king and attempted unsuccessfully to depose him at various occasions.
  • Except for a dervish Sidi Maula, who was murdered for supposedly plotting to depose him, he was generous with the rebels.
  • Jalal-ud-din was slain by his nephew Ali Gurshasp, who became Alauddin Khalji and ascended the throne.
Achievements

Achievements of Jalaluddin Firoz Khilji

Revolt of Malik Chhajju

  • Malik Chhajju was the nephew of Balban (the last ruler of the Slave Dynasty). In August 1290 A.D, Malik Chhajju revolted.
  • Amir Ali Hatim Khan, the governor of Oudh, and numerous other lords from the eastern regions supported him in this revolt. To claim the throne, he journeyed to Delhi.
  • Jalal-ud-Din's eldest son, Arkali Khan, defeated him near Badaun, apprehended him, and handed him to the Sultan.
  • The monarch was kind to him and set him free.
  • When his son and nobles criticised the King's behaviour, he silenced them by claiming that he was not willing to sacrifice the blood of Muslims for the sake of the monarchy.

Generosity to erring nobles

  • When the Sultan was marching against Ranthambore, some nobles who were inebriated during a celebration threatened to kill the Sultan.
  • The Sultan was informed about this, instead of punishing them, he summoned them to a private meeting and challenged them to a duel.
  • But, once pacified, he was content with simply removing them from the court for a year.

Execution of Siddi Maula

  • The Sultan learned that several rebellious chiefs had sought the blessings of a 'faqir' Siddi Maula.
  • He was also alleged to suspect that they were planning to crown Siddi Maula as King.
  • It is unclear if Siddi Maula was innocent or a participant in the Sultan's assassination plot.
  • Regardless, the Sultan had him stomped by an elephant's feet. Other conspirators were deported or had their possessions seized.
  • This was maybe the only time the Sultan acted so sternly after becoming Sultan of Delhi.

Kindness to the Mongols

  • During the reign of Jalal-ud-Din, the Mongols launched a massive campaign against India.
  • Regarding the invasion, there are two accounts.
    • According to one account, the Sultan personally fought and defeated them in Punjab. They were forgiven, and some of them were given permission to live in the Delhi area.
    • The Mongols converted to Islam and were dubbed "Neo Muslims" as a result of their conversion.
    • Another legend claims that the Sultan defeated the Mongols' advance guard and captured several of them.
  • He made peace with the Mongols because he was frightened of facing their main force. The Mongols left and were allowed to settle in the Delhi outskirts.

Expeditions of Jalal-ud-din Firoz Khilji

  • Ala-ud-Din, the Sultan's nephew and son-in-law, embarked on two daring journeys.
  • After obtaining the Sultan's consent, one expedition was sent to Bhilsa.
  • Ala-ud-Din pillaged Bhilsa and delivered the spoils to the Sultan.
  • Ala-ud-Din's second voyage to Devagiri was performed without the Sultan's consent.
  • Ala-ud-din received a large sum of money, as well as horses and elephants, from this trip. Without a doubt, Ala-ud- Din benefited greatly from this mission.
Death

Death of Jalal-ud-din Firoz Khilji

  • After defeating the monarch of Devagiri, Ala-ud-din returned with enormous treasure.
  • Some of the Sultan's close nobles suspected foul play, but the Sultan ignored them and travelled to Kara to meet Ala-ud-Din.
  • Ala-ud-Din had plotted a wicked assassination of his uncle-cum-father-in-law.
  • On reaching Kara Sultan hugged his nephew and son-in-law.
  • Ali signaled Muhammad Salim, who slashed Jalal-ud-din twice with his sword.
  • The Sultan's head was severed from his body, and the Sultan's other supporters were also slaughtered.
  • Ali proclaimed himself Sultan of Delhi by raising the imperial canopy above his head.
Conclusion

Conclusion

Jalaluddin Khalji ruled at a period that was not very prosperous in terms of administrative achievements, yet he was a successful ruler. He not only established control over the young Muslim country, but he also solved the Sultanate's difficulties. Education and literature blossomed under his reign. He was a patron of artists and writers. He pursued a liberal agenda because he despised terrorism, recklessness, and pointless bloodshed. He was intolerant of Hindu religion, just like his predecessor. He may have been a successful king and his programmes could have been extremely beneficial, but Alauddin's plot thwarted his progress and he became a victim of his ambitions.
