All organisms that get their food from the environment are heterotrophs. Heterotrophs include all animals and certain microorganisms. These organisms must consume, or assimilate, food that contains organic nutrients that have already been synthesized by other plants or animals. It relies entirely on what they consume and how they receive it. Herbivores, carnivores, omnivores, and saprobes are all the categories of heterotrophs.   • These organisms are known as heterotrophs, which means they must feed on something different (hetero).
  • When we think of anything that we eat for energy, we usually think of animals such as birds, cats, or insects.
  • These are only a few examples of consumers; there are more that are less well-known.
  • Fungi, also known as mushrooms, may appear to be planted, yet they are heterotrophs.
  • They extend small tubes into other live or dead species, sucking the nutrients right out of them!
  • Consumers can also be single-celled creatures. Although the amoeba is only a single cell, it pursues and consumes other minute creatures.
  • Bacteria in the soil serve as decomposers, eating and breaking down dead matter so that it can be recycled back into the food chain.
  • As a result, a consumer is an organism that feeds on the nutrients provided by other species.
  • They are further classified into three and the term Macro consumers or Phagotrophs refers to all three types of consumers.

  • These are animals that are capable of killing tertiary consumers.
  • Like lions, tigers, vultures, and other predators are the examples of quaternary consumers.
