Zafar Khan, a Turkish nobleman who assumed the title of Ala-ud-din Hassan Bahman Shah, was the founder of one of India's great medieval kingdoms, the Bahmani kingdom. He created it by revolting against the Delhi Sultanate's Muhammad bin Tughlaq. He expanded his empire from Daulatabad in the west to Bhongir in the east by constant fighting. He was an excellent administrator, dividing his realm into four provinces: Gulbarg, Daulatabad, Berar, and Bidar. Each of these provinces was given a governor who kept an army and appointed people to all civil and military positions.   • Zafar Khan took part in a revolt against the Tughlaqs in 1339. After the revolt failed, he and his allies were deported to Afghanistan the next year.
  • In 1346, he returned to the Deccan and took part in a siege of Gulbarga, which was then under Tughluq's power. The siege was a success.
  • Initially he was appointed as governor and then as the commander of an army in Daulatabad in 1347.
  • Nasir-ud-Din Ismail Shah (Ismail Mukh, whom the Deccan rebel amirs installed on the throne of Daulatabad in 1345) abdicated in his favour on August 3, 1347, and he established the Bahmani Kingdom with its capital at Hasanabad (Gulbarga).

Reign of Alauddin Hasan Bahman Shah

  • On ascending to the throne, Zafar Khan assumed the title Abu'l-Muzaffar Alauddin Bahman Shah.
  • He awarded Ismail Mukh a jagir near Jamkhandi and later named him Amir-ul-Umara, the highest rank in his country.
  • However, Narayana, a local Hindu ruler, managed to turn Ismail against Bahman Shah for a brief time before poisoning him.
  • In 1350, Bahman Shah launched his first assault against Warangal, forcing its ruler Kapaya Nayaka to hand over the citadel of Kaulas to him.
  • His realm was divided into four provinces, each of which had its own governor.
  • Hasan fought multiple conflicts with Vijayanagara during his rule.
