The correct answer is

Both A and R are true, and R is the correct explanation of A.

This is an Assertion–Reason item, so we judge each statement separately and then check whether the Reason genuinely explains the Assertion.

The Assertion says the correlation function of mass media is vital for any society. In mass-communication theory (following Lasswell and Wright), media perform key functions: surveillance of the environment, correlation of the parts of society in responding to that environment, transmission of cultural heritage, and entertainment. The correlation function is precisely the selecting, interpreting and prescribing role — it links, comments on and gives meaning to events so society can respond in a coordinated way. This Assertion is therefore true.

The Reason says the interpretational aspects, which include advertising and public relations, shape and influence public opinion. This is also true, and crucially it explains why correlation matters: correlation is an interpretive activity, and it is exactly through interpretation, persuasion, advertising and public relations that media shape and mould public opinion. Hence the Reason supplies the mechanism behind the Assertion.

Because both statements are true and the Reason correctly accounts for the Assertion, the options claiming R is not the correct explanation, or that either statement is false, are all wrong.

Correct answer: Both A and R are true, and R is the correct explanation of A.
