Question

In the given velocity (V) versus time (t) graph, accelerated and decelerated motions are respectively represented by line segments

This question was previously asked in
NDA II 2019 GAT Previous Year Paper (17-Nov-2019)
The correct answer is

CD and AB

CONCEPT :

  • The rate of change of velocity  is called as  acceleration  of the body.

\(a = \frac{{{v_2} - {v_1}}}{{{t_2} - {t_1}}}\)

Where v 2= Final velocity and v 1= Initial velocity of an object at time  \({t_2},{t_1}\)  respectively

  • It is a  vector quantity because it has both magnitude and direction .

EXPLANATION :

This graph shows three cases when

  1. When the body is moving with constant velocity , there won't be any acceleration and it can be shown as a straight line on the graph as we can see between point BC.
  2. If we get ascending or increasing slope on the graph then, it shows that the object is accelerating also we can see this between point CD.
  3. If we get descending or decreasing slope  on the graph, then it shows that the object is decelerating which we can see between point AB.
