Phagocytosis is a vital cellular process where specialized cells, called phagocytes (e.g., macrophages, neutrophils, dendritic cells), engulf solid particles, such as bacteria, dead cells, or debris. The process begins with recognition and attachment of the particle to the phagocyte's surface receptors. Next, the phagocyte extends its cell membrane (pseudopods) to ingest the particle, forming an internal vesicle called a phagosome. The phagosome then fuses with lysosomes, which contain digestive enzymes and reactive oxygen species, forming a phagolysosome. Within the phagolysosome, the ingested material is digested and degraded. Finally, undigested remnants are either expelled from the cell or retained. This process is crucial for host defense against infection and for clearing cellular debris.
