Assessing Renal Tubular Function – Key Tests
Urine Specific Gravity / Osmolality
Measures the ability of tubules to concentrate or dilute urine. Persistently low fixed values suggest impaired concentrating ability, while high values indicate intact function.
Free Water Clearance
Quantifies the kidney’s capacity to excrete or conserve water independently of solutes. Positive values reflect water diuresis, negative values show antidiuresis, and abnormal results point to tubular dysfunction.
Urinary Acidification Test
