Question

How will you manage a case of misplaced copper-T (Cu-T)?

This question was previously asked in
UPSC CSE 2025 (Prelims) CSAT Official Paper (25-May-2025)

Management of a misplaced Copper-T (Cu-T) begins when strings are not visible or migration is suspected. Pelvic exam checks for strings, while transvaginal ultrasound confirms uterine location, embedment, or perforation. If not visualized, abdominal X-ray or CT scan helps localize. If intrauterine, retrieval with sound, forceps, or hook may succeed; if unsuccessful, hysteroscopy is used. For embedment or perforation, laparoscopy is preferred for safe removal, with laparotomy reserved for complex cases like bowel involvement. Post-retrieval, patients should be counseled on contraception, monitored for infection, bleeding, or pain, and provided with appropriate follow-up.
