UPSC CSE 2025 (Prelims) CSAT Official Paper (25-May-2025)

Managing hypothermia in a three-year-old child with Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) requires prompt and gentle rewarming. Hypothermia is confirmed when axillary temperature is below 35.5°C or rectal temperature is under 35°C. The child should be placed in a warm environment (25–30°C) and dried thoroughly. Skin-to-skin contact with the caregiver, known as Kangaroo Mother Care, is the preferred rewarming method, with both wrapped in a warm blanket. Alternatively, gradual warming can be achieved using a blanket, radiant warmer, or heater, ensuring the temperature increases slowly at 0.5–1°C per hour. Providing warm feeds such as F-75 milk or breast milk supports energy needs, while antibiotics are given to address possible infection, since hypothermia often signals sepsis. Continuous monitoring of temperature, pulse, and breathing is essential. Prevention includes keeping the child in dry clothing, covering with blankets including a hat, avoiding drafts, ensuring a warm room at night, promoting frequent feeding, and regular temperature checks during early admission.
