Define Systemic Vascular Resistance and list its determinants. Briefly explain the role of its determinants.
Systemic Vascular Resistance (SVR), also termed Total Peripheral Resistance (TPR), is the resistance encountered by blood as it flows through systemic vessels, excluding pulmonary circulation. It is a major determinant of arterial pressure.
Key Determinants:
Vessel Radius: The most critical factor, since resistance is inversely proportional to the fourth power of radius. Vasoconstriction in arterioles markedly elevates SVR, while vasodilation reduces it.
Vessel Length: Greater length increases resistance, though individual vessel length is constant; the vascular network contributes overall.
Blood Viscosity: Thicker blood, as in polycythemia, raises SVR, whereas lower viscosity, as in anemia, reduces it.
