Describe the formation, course and branches of ulnar nerve. Which muscles do each of the branches supply? Why is ulnar nerve called the "musician's nerve"?
The ulnar nerve, formed from the medial cord of the brachial plexus with contributions from the C8 and T1 roots, begins its path in the axilla. It travels medially along the arm and pierces the medial intermuscular septum, entering the posterior compartment before coursing behind the medial epicondyle through the cubital tunnel, which is a frequent site of compression. Within the forearm, the nerve passes deep to flexor carpi ulnaris and supplies that muscle together with the medial half of flexor digitorum profundus. In the hand, the ulnar nerve separates into a superficial sensory branch and a deep motor branch. The superficial branch provides cutaneous innervation to the little finger and the medial half of the ring finger, while also supplying palmaris brevis. The deep branch innervates the hypothenar muscles, the third and fourth lumbricals, all interossei, and adductor pollicis, ensuring refined control of intricate finger movements.
