The water cycle is a natural phenomenon in which water flows from the earth to the atmosphere and then back to the earth, completing the cycle. This cycle involves many complex processes, but it is responsible for recharging our freshwater resources such as rivers, lakes, and the groundwater table, among others, and the rain that the Water Cycle brings is necessary for plant development, and temperature regulation, and irrigation in agriculture.   • The water cycle is also known as the hydrological cycle is the circulation of water in various forms such as liquid, solid, and gaseous through Earth's hydrosphere.
  • Within the water cycle, water moves in different ways in different realms.
  • The movement of water through ocean streams in the hydrosphere and water movement through rivers and glaciers towards the sea in the lithosphere are all included in the water cycle.
  • Water is said to be stored in the following reservoirs
    • Atmosphere,
    • Oceans,
    • Lakes
    • Rivers,
    • Glaciers
    • Soil
    • Snowfields and
    • Groundwater.
  • Water is moved from one reservoir to another through evaporation, condensation, precipitation, runoff, infiltration, transpiration, and groundwater flow.

Stage I- Evaporation

  • When the sun's radiant energy heats water molecules, some of them become incredibly active and rise into the atmosphere as vapor.
  • Evaporation is the process of water transferring from bodies of surface water into the atmosphere.
  • During this transition, the physical nature of water shifts from liquid to gas.

Evapotranspiration

  • In addition to evaporation, plant transpiration can be observed. As a result, this process is referred to as evapotranspiration.
  • Around 90% of atmospheric water is lost through evaporation, with the remaining 10% lost through transpiration.
  • Plants take in water through their roots and release it through their leaves, a process that can clean water by eliminating pollutants and toxins.
  • Evapotranspiration includes both water evaporating from the ground and plant transpiration.
  • Evapotranspiration allows water vapour to re-enter the atmosphere.

Stage II- Condensation

  • Rising warm air carries water vapour high into the sky, where it cools and condenses as water droplets around dust particles in the air.
  • Some of the vapour condenses into microscopic ice crystals, which attract cooled water droplets.
  • The drops condense on the ice crystals, resulting in bigger crystals known as snowflakes.

Stage III- Precipitation

  • When snowflakes become too heavy, they fall. When snowflakes collide with warmer air on their way down, they turn into raindrops.
  • In tropical climates, cloud droplets clump together around dust or sea salt particles.
  • They clash and expand in size until they can no longer fall.
  • There is occasionally a layer of air above freezing, or 32° F, in the clouds.
  • As you move closer to the earth, the air temperature drops below freezing.
  • Snowflakes melt in the warmer air layer and then freeze in the cold air near the ground.
  • This sort of precipitation is known as sleet. It bounces when it touches the ground.
  • Thunderstorms can also create hail, which is a different sort of precipitation.

Stage III- Infiltration

  • Infiltration is the process through which rainwater is absorbed into the ground.
  • The amount of absorption varies depending on the medium into which the water has entered.
  • Rocks, for example, will retain significantly less water than dirt. Streams and rivers can both carry groundwater.
  • However, it is possible that it will simply sink deeper, forming aquifers.

Stage IV- Runoff

  • If rainfall does not form aquifers, it is carried down the sides of mountains and hills by gravity, eventually producing rivers. Runoff is the term for this process.
  • When the amount of snowfall exceeds the rate of evaporation or sublimation in colder places, icecaps form.
  • The poles are home to the world's largest ice caps.
  • All of the preceding processes occur in a cyclical manner, with no definite start or end.
