Vatsyayana - Ancient India History Notes

Vatsyayana was a famous ancient Indian philosopher who wrote the Kama Sutra. He was a brahmin who lived in India between the second and third centuries CE, most likely in Pataliputra (modern day Patna in Bihar). His name is sometimes confused with Mallanaga, the Asura seer who is credited with the invention of erotic science. This article will explain to you the Vatsyayana which will be helpful in Ancient History preparation for the UPSC Civil service exam.

Vatsyayana

Vatsyayana

  • From sources other than the Kamasutra, very little is known about Vatsyayana.
  • In his treatise Kama Sutra, Vatsyayana recorded his interest in refined human behaviour, including sexual behaviour, as a means of fulfilment.
  • Some scholars believe he lived between the first and sixth centuries CE.
  • This case is brought up by Vatsyayana to warn people about the dangers of some old customs of striking women while under the influence of sexual passion.
  • Vatsyayana must have lived after this king of Kuntal, as he is believed to have lived and reigned.
  • He mentions Satakarni Satavahana, a Kuntal king, killing Malayevati, his wife, with an instrument called Katari by striking her in love.
  • Varahamihira, on the other hand, discusses the science of love in the eighth chapter of his "Brihat Samhita," and appears to have borrowed heavily from Vatsyayana on the subject.
  • Some believe Varahamihira lived in the sixth century, so Vatsyayana's works must have been written before that time.

Vatsyayana - Literary works

  • Vatsyayana is widely regarded as the author because his name appears in the colophon verse, but little is known about him.
  • According to Vatsyayana, he wrote the text after much meditation.
  • Vatsyayana acknowledges in the preface that he is distilling many ancient texts, but that these have not survived.
  • He cites the work of "teachers" and "scholars," as well as longer texts by Auddalaki, Babhravya, Dattaka, Suvarnanabha, Ghotakamukha, Gonardiya, Gonikaputra, Charayana, and Kuchumara.
  • The Brihatsamhita of Varahamihira, as well as Kalidasa's poems, mention and quote Vatsyayana's Kamasutra.
  • This indicates that he lived prior to the 5th century CE.
  • According to Vatsyayana's Kama Sutra, it contains 1,250 verses divided into 36 chapters and 64 sections organised into seven books.
  • The statements appear in the first chapter of the text, which is a common practice in ancient Hindu texts and was most likely included to prevent major and unauthorised expansions of a popular text.
  • The text that has survived into the modern era is divided into 67 sections, which are listed in Book 7 and in Yashodhara's Sanskrit commentary (bhasya) on the text.
  • The Kamasutra employs a mix of prose and poetry, and the narration takes the form of a dramatic fiction, with two characters known as the nayaka (man) and nayika (woman), who are assisted by characters known as pitamarda (libertine), vita (pander), and vidushaka (jester).
  • This format is based on the teachings of the Natyasastra, a Sanskrit classic.
  • He is not to be confused with Paksilasvamin Vatsyayana, the author of the first preserved commentary on Gotama's Nyaya Sutras, Nyaya Sutra Bhashya.
Conclusion

Conclusion

The Kama Sutra was written by Vatsyayana, a famous ancient Indian philosopher. Varahamihira's Brihatsamhita and Kalidasa's poems both mention and quote Vatsyayana's Kamasutra.
