The President of India appoints a Special Officer for Linguistic Minorities (350B) to protect the rights of linguistic minorities. In 1957, the post of the Special Officer for Linguistic Minorities was established in accordance with Article 350B of the Constitution. He/she is designated as the Linguistic Minorities Commissioner.   • Initially, there was no provision in the Indian Constitution for a Special Officer for Linguistic Minorities. The States Reorganization Commission (1955–1955) issued a suggestion in this regard later on.
  • As a result, in Part XVII of the Constitution, the Seventh Constitutional Amendment Act of 1956 added a new Article 350-B. The following provisions are included in this article:

  • To submit to the president the reports on the status of implementation of constitutionally and nationally agreed safeguards to linguistic minorities.
