There are currently 77 space organisations or agencies worldwide, with 16 of them having launch capabilities. NASA is the most well-known, but there are also significant agencies in Russia, China, Europe, Canada, Japan, and India which are in charge of space exploration, space research, and space programme management. 1) National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)

  • NASA is the American space exploration agency, with the largest budget of any agency on this list.

2) Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation was founded in 1962 and is headquartered in Bangalore, India's technology capital.
  • This makes it one of the world's first space-specific government agencies.
  • In 2008, one of the ISRO's lunar orbiters discovered lunar water in the form of ice.
  • India has ambitious plans for the future, including the development of a reusable launch vehicle, interplanetary probes, and human spaceflight capability.
  • ISRO set a new world record in 2017 by launching 104 satellites into space on a single rocket (PSLV-C37). This record was later broken by SpaceX.
  • In its first attempt, India's space agency successfully landed a spacecraft on Mars. Even NASA needed two attempts to soft-land its spacecraft on Mars.

3) China National Space Administration (CNSA)

  • The CNSA, which was founded in 1993 and is one of the world's youngest space agencies, has become the third country to independently send a human into orbit with their own spacecraft (after Russia and America).
  • China has successfully launched a number of spacecrafts, including the Chang'e lunar landers and rovers, as well as the Tiangong space laboratory.

  • The RFSA is well-known for launching Yuri Gagarin, the first successful human spaceflight, in 1961.
  • Russia was the first country to launch animals into space, and it was also the first country to send the first female astronaut, Valentina Tereshkova, into space.
  • Russia was the first country to bring moon soil to Earth. Russia launched Sputnik-1, the world's first artificial satellite, in 1957.
  • The agency also played a key role in the development of Russia's satellite navigation system, GLONASS, launching 24 satellites at a time.

5) European Space Agency (ESA)

  • The European Space Agency is the third-largest space agency in terms of budget.

  • The organisation has been headquartered in Paris since 1975.
  • The agency has successfully developed a number of spacecraft and satellites, including the Ariane 5 spacecraft, which launched the James Webb telescope in collaboration with NASA.

6) Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)

  • JAXA was formed in 2003 by the merger of three Japanese organisations - Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS), National Aerospace Laboratory of Japan (NAL), and National Space Development Agency of Japan (NSDAJ).
  • JAXA oversees a wide range of space exploration and communications projects. They are particularly interested in asteroid exploration and are investigating the possibility of human exploration of the Moon.
  • JAXA rose to prominence after launching the Hayabusa 1 Mission in 2003. This mission sought to learn more about the asteroid Ryugu, which is located 300 million kilometres from Earth.
  • However, Hayabusa 1 was a failure, and as a result, JAXA launched Hayabusa 2 in 2014. Its mission was to collect samples from the asteroid Ryugu and return them to Earth, which it accomplished in 2020.

7) National Centre for Space Studies (France)

  • In 1961, the French Space Agency was established. Its headquarters are located in Paris. CNES is another name for this space agency.
  • CNES is the full form of Centre national d'études spatiales, which is in French.
  • CNES is the world's third-oldest space agency, following Russia's Soviet space programme and America's National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
  • The French space agency is working with Germany and other government space agencies to develop a reusable launch vehicle powered by methane.
  • This project's main goal is to drastically reduce the cost and time required to refurbish reusable rockets.
