The silk industry is the one that is responsible for the breeding of silkworms as well as the production of silk thread and fabric from the silk they produce. The Indian silk industry is one of the largest generators of employment and foreign exchange for the country as sericulture activities are spread across 52,360 villages in India. In terms of the production of all commercially useful varieties of silk, India holds a unique global position. India is the world's second-largest silk producer. During FY19, sericulture employed more than 9.1 million people in India.   • Silk production is divided into two stages:
    • pre-cocoon
    • post-cocoon.

Pre-cocoon Stage

  • Sericulturists plant mulberry trees and raise disease-free silkworm seeds that grow on mulberry leaves in the first phase.
  • As the quality of silk depends on the leaves fed to the silkworms, great care is taken with the initial seeds and mulberry plantation.
  • Silkworms go through four stages of development, from egg to moth, and during the caterpillar stage, they spin a cocoon around themselves.
  • The silkworm's spun thread is primarily made up of two proteins: fibroin, the fibre, and sericin, the adhesive between the cocoon and the fibre.

Post-cocoon Stage

  • In the post-cocoon phase, reeling occurs.
  • Silk is reeled from cocoons within fifteen days of spinning to obtain the highest quality silk. With 10 kg of cocoons, one roll of silk can be made. Weavers weave the reeled silk into finished products for the consumer market.
  • Silk threads have been reeled on reeling machines installed in the homes of silk industrialists for centuries.
  • Reeling is a simple process that involves cooking the cocoons in hot water and then reeling the silk fibres into threads with fingers while the cocoons are still hot.
  • With the advancement of automation across the board, high-capacity automated reeling machines with high productivity and yield rates are now available, requiring minimal human intervention.
