SAVE is a coalition of like-minded regional and international organisations formed to oversee and coordinate conservation, campaigning, and fundraising efforts to alleviate the plight of South Asia's vultures.   • The establishment of a captive-breeding programme would allow the birds to be released back into the wild when it was safe to do so.

  • The Oriental white-blacked vultures, one of the most common large bird preys in the world, were abundant in India during the 1980s.
  • Slowly, the number of these vultures has declined dramatically, and there are now fewer than 1000 of them left. The population of this bird has decreased by nearly 99.9 percent.

  • Diclofenac, a pain reliever given to cattle, is the primary cause of vulture extinction.
  • Vultures, which have a digestive system capable of digesting pathogens found in rotting meat of the dead, lack a critical enzyme that breaks down diclofenac and die of renal failure after eating carcasses of cattle given the drug.
  • Vultures that feed on cattle either die from acute kidney failure or lose their ability to reproduce within a few days.
  • Although India banned the use of the veterinary drug "Diclofenac," which is toxic to any vulture that feeds on the carcass of recently treated cattle, SAVE found that the drug is still being sold and used illegally today.
  • Diclofenac is not the only vulture-toxic Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drug (NSAID) that is being used to kill vultures.
    • Now that diclofenac has been banned in South Asia and its veterinary use has been greatly reduced, other vulture-toxic NSAIDs are competing with meloxicam for diclofenac's former market share, posing a real threat to the recovery of Asia's critically endangered vultures.
  • There are six NSAIDs other than diclofenac that are toxic to vultures: aceclofenac, carprofen, flunixin, ketoprofen, nimesulide, and phenylbutazone.
  • Meloxicam is the only known NSAID that is safe for vultures.
