Satakarni-I, also known as Sri Satkarni, was a great ruler among the Early Satavahanas and the son of Simuka. His queen's name was Naganika, and he was known as the Lord of Dakshinapatha. Kanha expanded his empire to the south, to the Malwa and Narmada valleys. He performed the Ashvamedha and Rajsuya Yajnas.   • The Puranas state that the Satavahana king Simuka was succeeded by his brother Krishna (also known as Kanha).
  • Krishna was succeeded by Mallakarni, according to Matsya Purana, but Satakarni was succeeded by other Puranas. Satakarni's family members are listed in the Nanaghat cave inscription: Simuka's name is mentioned, but not Krishna's.

  • The Kalinga king Kharavela's Hathigumpha inscription mentions a king named "Satakani" or "Satakamini," who is identified with Satakarni.
  • The inscription describes the dispatch of an army and Kharavela's threat to a city known variously as "Masika" (Masikanagara), "Musika" (Musikanagara), or "Asika" (Asikanagara). According to NK Sahu, Asika is the capital of Assaka janapada.
  • According to historian Ajay Mitra Shastri, Asika-nagara was located in the present-day Adam village in the Nagpur district, where an Assaka-related seal was discovered.
  • The inscription also mentions a river, which has been variously identified as Krishna or the combined flow of Kanha and Wainganga.
  • Kharavela dispatched an army to attack Satkarani. It is also claimed that Kharavela dispatched an army that advanced up the Krishna River and threatened the Musika city, which is located near the confluence of the Krishna and Musi rivers (near present-day Nalgonda).
  • Satakarni wished to prevent Kharavela from invading his kingdom. As a result, he sent horses, elephants, chariots, and men as a tribute to Kharavela. Kharavela captured Masika with the help of Kusumba Kshatriyas the same year.
  • Kharavela's army was unable to advance against Satakarni, so it detoured to threaten the city of Asika (Asikanagara).
