Raghuvamsa - Kalidasa - Ancient India History Notes

Raghuvamsa is a Sanskrit mahakavya (epic poem) written by Kalidasa, the most famous Sanskrit poet. Though the poet's exact date of writing is uncertain, he is thought to have lived in the 5th century CE. It tells the history of the Raghu dynasty, namely the family of Dilipa and his successors up to Agnivarna, who include Raghu, Dasharatha, and Rama, in 19 sargas (cantos). Vallabhadeva, a Kashmiri scholar from the 10th century, wrote the first extant commentary on the text. The Sanjivani, authored by Mallinatha, is the most popular and readily available commentary.   • Raghuvamsa recounts the achievements and victories of the great ruler Raghu. He was in command of a military mission to Transoxiana.
  • He marches through Central Asia, conquering everything and everyone in his path, until he reaches Vankshu, where a terrible fight takes place.
  • The defeated faces were damaged beyond recognition, and it is reported that this type of facial mutilation was common in Central Asia at the period.
  • Raghu and his army came across the Kambojas after the Vankshu, who gladly succumbed to the great warrior's heroism and rewarded him with presents and vast wealth.
  • The Kambojas are apparently the ancient Iranian people mentioned in ancient Indian literature.
  • Raghu was full of vigour and dexterity since he was a little boy. He once saved his father's horse.
  • There was once a cut throat battle between Raghu and Indra go, during the time of Dileepa's one hundredth Ashwamedha sacrifice.
  • Indra gets very astounded by Raghu's courage and blesses Dileepa.
  • Dileepa gives the throne to Raghu and leaves for the forest to meditate and live the life of abstinence. Raghu being the hero, he defeated several kings and captured more and more land and spread out his kingdom.
  • He arranges for a great sacrificial yaga called the vishwajit yaga and gives away a large chunk of his accumulated wealth as charity. At that moment Kautsa, son of a sage, comes and asks for his holy fees called the Gurudakshina.
  • But King Raghu had already donated all of his wealth and possessions. He could only offer him some money but that was not enough for the sage's son.
  • Knowing this, Raghu wages a war against Kubera, the god of wealth but Kubera agrees to help Raghu and gives him enough wealth to give Gurudakshina to Kautsa.
  • After this in the story Kalidasa mentions 28 other kings of the dynasty. It depicts the old traditional culture of our country.
