Background

Ghatotkacha - Background

  • Ghatotkacha was the son of Gupta, the Gupta dynasty's founder.
  • Ghatotkacha, like his father, is not documented by his own inscriptions.
  • His grandson Samudragupta's Allahabad Pillar inscription contains the earliest description of him, which is repeated verbatim in several later records of the dynasty.
  • Previously, a gold coin and a clay seal were attributed to him, but these are now unanimously assigned to Ghatotkacha-gupta, who was a son or younger brother of the 5th century Gupta ruler Kumaragupta I.

Inscription

Ghatotkacha - Inscription

  • The title Maharaja ("king of great kings") is used for Gupta and Ghatotkacha in the Allahabad Pillar inscription, as opposed to the title Maharajadhiraja ("king of great kings") for Ghatotkacha's son Chandragupta I.
  • The title Maharaja was later used by feudatory rulers, which has led to speculation that Gupta and Ghatotkacha were feudatory kings.
  • However, there are several instances of paramount sovereigns using the title Maharaja in both the pre-Gupta and post-Gupta periods, so this cannot be said with certainty. Having said that, there is no doubt that Gupta and Ghatotkacha had a lower status and were less powerful than Chandragupta I.

Ghatotkacha - During his Reign

  • Ghatotkacha may have been the one who formed a matrimonial alliance with the Lichchhavis, resulting in the marriage of the Lichchhavi princess Kumaradevi to his son Chandragupta I.
  • With the exception of Kumaradevi, the Gupta inscriptions do not mention the paternal family of the dynasty's queens, implying that the Gupta family considered Kumaradevi's marriage to Chandragupta to be a significant event.
Conclusion

Conclusion

Ghatotkacha was succeeded by his son, Chandragupta I. Chandragupta was the son of Gupta king Ghatotkacha and the grandson of the dynasty's founder Sri Gupta, both of whom are referred to in the Allahabad Pillar inscription as Maharaja ("great king"). Chandragupta assumed the title Maharajadhiraja and issued gold coins, implying that he was the dynasty's first imperial ruler.
